On the early morning of Wednesday the 27th, Top Dawg Entertainment’s Punch released a new track on the record label’s SoundCloud page. Listen to “Untitled 105” feat. Willie B. here:

The track is extremely lyrical with gloomy instrumentals. The verses are intriguing to listen to and certainly match up to the level expected from TDE. The first person that appears on the track is actually Punch, and the second one is Willie B.

TDE is home to artists like Kendrick Lamar, SZA, ScHoolboy Q, Isaiah Rashad, and many others. The label was founded in 2004 by Top Dawg. Punch is currently TDE’s president.

On the other hand, Willie B is a producer and artist coming out of Los Angeles. He’s not officially a part of Top Dawg Entertainment, but has worked with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, and ScHoolboy Q in the past.

For any other news on Top Dawg Entertainment’s moves and your favorite record labels, stay tuned to the Underground Flux.

The main takeaways from Carmelo Anthony’s trade to OKC http://undergroundflux.com/carmelo-anthony-okc-trade/ http://undergroundflux.com/carmelo-anthony-okc-trade/#respond Tue, 26 Sep 2017 22:41:57 +0000 http://undergroundflux.com/?p=873 Carmelo Anthony has been traded from the New York Knicks to the Oklahoma City Thunder to form a new superstar trident alongside Russell Westbrook and Paul George. Carmelo Anthony has been traded from the New York Knicks to the Oklahoma City Thunder to form a new superstar trident alongside Russell Westbrook and Paul George. While it’ll undoubtedly be interesting to see how this pans out, there are already a series of possible positives and negatives that come with this blockbuster trade.

Negatives

The first question that Oklahoma City head coach Billy Donovan has to answer is how he’ll line up the Thunder as the season passes. Russell Westbrook and Steven Adams are undisputed starters going back as last year, while Anthony and George will seemingly receive starting berths alongside André Roberson, per the Thunder’s media day.

Theoretically, this is most balanced starting five for the Thunder, with one of George or Anthony at the power forward position and the remaining player taking up small forward duties. However, both Melo and PauL George have voiced out their discontent at playing the 4 full-time in the past. Neither player enjoys the defensive requirements of the role, as well as having to bang down low with players often bigger than them.

If Donovan ever starts Anthony and George at the 2 and the 3, this would relegate André Roberson to the bench. Roberson is one of the best perimeter defenders in the league and has proved as much in the last couple of Playoffs, but his incredibly limited offensive skillset would practically render him useless coming off the bench.

Additionally, a wing duo of Roberson and one of Anthony and George would boost OKC’s defense. All three players can lead a switchable defense and both wings are capable of helping out the power forward who wouldn’t be in his defensive comfort zone.

The other biggest concern is that the big three of Westbrook, George, and Anthony are three of the most ball-dominant players in the league. According to Basketball Reference, Westbrook posted a historically high 41.7 USG% (usage percentage) last season, while Anthony and George were in the NBA’s top 20 with a 29.1 USG% and a 28.9 USG% respectively.

With all three on the same team, they won’t be able to get as many touches on the ball. Hierarchy, position, and time on the team indicates that Westbrook will be the player who has the ball the most, but it remains to be seen how George and Anthony adapt after being the leaders in Indiana and New York the past few years.

The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor suggested that this trade will allow the Team USA version of Carmelo Anthony to make it into the NBA. In other words, OKC’s new no. 7 would be less ball-dominant and be an elite off-the-catch shooter (Anthony had a 42.6 catch-and-shoot 3P% last season, according to the NBA) who can also take over in isolation situations. However, it’s worth noting that “Team USA Melo” plays for less minutes (23.3 minutes/game in the Rio Olympics, according to USA Basketball), is on the best international roster in the world, and plays against lesser opposition during just a couple of months.

On the other hand, Paul George’s struggles with not having the ball in key moments are well-documented, and this is when he played for Indiana where he was actually the best player on the team. George lashed out in the 2017 Playoffs for not having taken the last shot in Game 1 against Cleveland, but since entering the NBA, George has the dismal recognition of going 0/15 in go-ahead shots in the last 20 seconds of the game, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.

Positives

As mentioned earlier, Oklahoma City’s current starting lineup (Westbrook, Roberson, George, Anthony, Adams) gives them a switch-heavy defense, possibly one of the best in the league. Westbrook and Anthony aren’t the best defenders, but they can hold their own when motivated. And they should be motivated. Meanwhile, Roberson, George, and Steven Adams are all some of the best defensive players in their respective positions.

This lineup is also tailor-made to combat Golden State, the Thunder’s biggest rivals, especially if Adams is swapped out for the incoming Patrick Patterson. The only Achilles heel would be Roberson’s poor free throw shooting, but Oklahoma City now have the manpower to sub Roberson out for a positive player in those situations. In a late game situation, a flexible lineup could easily consist of Westbrook, George, Anthony, Patterson, and Adams.

Westbrook, George, and Anthony have all been the sole superstars on their teams up to this point. This has made them deal with double-team, triple-team, and trap situations. Now, this is no longer an option for opposing teams. If you double up on Melo, this leaves Westbrook or PG13 open to do damage and vice versa.

The added firepower of Carmelo Anthony and Paul George will also allow Oklahoma City to not crumble when Westbrook is benched. In last season’s Playoffs series against the Houston Rockets, Houston outscored OKC by 58 points in the 46 minutes Russell was on the bench. According to the NBA, Oklahoma City’s offensive rating (points scored/produced per 100 possessions) was a measly 97.4 for the entire season when Westbrook was off the court.

Although the ISO-only mentality is a relic in today’s league, it’s still a highly valuable skillset in clutch situations. Carmelo Anthony’s isolation scoring ability is undoubtedly elite. This is a man who scored 50 points on only jump shots. Per the NBA, Melo scored on 47.3% of his isolations last season, just below Kevin Durant and above LeBron James.

It’s tough to predict how anything will pan out in the NBA, but Carmelo Anthony’s trade will bring some positives and some negatives. It’s up to the organization, the players, Billy Donovan, and Melo himself to determine what the end of this blockbuster story will be.

Kendrick Lamar Duckworth.

Coming out of the notorious city of Compton, CA, Kendrick has blessed the rap game with numerous classics. He’s won five Grammy’s, eleven BETs, and six MTV Music awards. After a close-to-perfect discography consisting of four studio albums, five mixtapes, and one EP, many already consider Kendrick as an all-time great.

The Dr. Dre deal with Aftermath Entertainment was the real pivotal point in his career. It was later on with Top Dawg Entertainment that Lamar’s fanbase continued to grow project after project. His first studio album in 2011, Section.80, made him more well-known outside the California scene. It was stacked with nicely mixed tracks, well-written bars, and intricate storytelling. The project has also aged incredibly well, with many rap fans still bumping it to this day.

Almost a year later, Lamar released Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, an album so incredible that is already considered an all-time classic. It is an introduction to Kendrick’s early life in Compton and the difficulties that came and went. The production by Dr. Dre and Kendrick’s masterful lyricism came together as an amazing project that certified him as a top notch rapper.

To Pimp a Butterfly (2015) is commonly viewed as K-Dot’s best album. It was inspired by a trip to South Africa, and is a lot more jazz-funk oriented. Additionally, the caterpillar concept delivered throughout the project is unforgettable and arguably one of the best ever. The project went on to win multiple awards and expand Kendrick’s audience outside of the hip hop bubble.

Most recently, Kendrick released DAMN to cap things off and solidify him as an all-time great. The album is extremely complex with a concept that is very hard to fully understand at first. Lamar has gone as far as calling it his best project yet.

It’s very hard to box Kendrick Lamar into one style. When one dives into his music, one can see so many different personas, voices, and rhythms that almost any music fan can enjoy what he does behind the mic.

Noah Cyrus, Miley’s younger sister, released her new track “Again” on Friday featuring the controversial XXXTENTACION.

“Again” takes a melancholic tone. In the first verse and chorus of the song, Noah implores for her lover to take her back. She’s not content with just being his friend after apparently having gone through a recent breakup or turbulent time of some sort.

XXXTENTACION hops on in the track’s second verse. His appearance is incredibly brief, but he stays in line with the troubled persona he displayed on 17. The troubled South Florida artist describes how he’s “somewhere in between love and broken,” possibly alluding to his well-documented legal troubles and shaky love life.

Noah’s vocals sound fine throughout the track, reminiscent of many teenage singers who have good voices but are still growing into their musical personas. The same goes for X, who shows off his vocals instead of rapping or talking like he’s done in past tracks. Different to Noah, “Again” shows that X has seemingly settled into his gloomy image after having grappled early in his career with which side of himself he wanted to show.

The song’s beat leaves a bit to be desired, with jarring sounds uneasily transitioning into synth-like pop. The latter style is more suited to Noah’s voice.

It remains to be seen what “Again” will do to Noah Cyrus’ budding music career. Her choice to collaborate with XXXTENTACION will no doubt be a hard pill to swallow for some of her fans, given his pending legal issues and violent past. Meanwhile, the song’s subject matter of love will also fuel this collab’s critics. X’s appearance on “Again” is ill-suited because of the accusations being held against him.

On the other hand, while the untimeliness of XXXTentacion’s feature is sure to displease a lot of fans, it could have a positive effect for Noah. Like it or not, “Again” has people talking and X is the ‘it’ topic in music currently. This track will bring new eyes to Noah Cyrus which, in turn, will lead to more exposure and perhaps bigger projects.

Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q remix Lil Wayne’s “6 Foot 7 Foot” http://undergroundflux.com/6-foot-7-foot-remix/ http://undergroundflux.com/6-foot-7-foot-remix/#respond Fri, 22 Sep 2017 15:12:54 +0000 http://undergroundflux.com/?p=761 Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q absolutely murder the beat in "6 Foot 7 Foot" into an extremely aggressive remix. Oh my god.

That was my first reaction when I saw the title of the remix. Even before hearing it, I knew Kendrick and Q were going to body the life out of that beat. I clicked on it. The beat starts with the faded sample from “6 Foot 7 Foot,” and within three seconds, Kendrick begins.

Said I’m a fuckin’ monster
A massive attack I haunt ya
Mastered the rap then fucked up the monitors
Mastered that after that I went for thermometors

My…GOD.

That was my reaction into the first two bars of the track. Literally ten seconds in and I’m already wildly overwhelmed. I take a pause, and then click play again.

Holla back they promised us
No pajamas insomnia
Will attack, I attack like piranha does
Hit your block like a comet (BLAHH!)

My entire face squints and my heart feels like it will explode. Blood is pumping through my veins in adrenaline and my entire body is ready to jump out in excitement. Within just 5 bars, Kendrick wrecks the entire planet. I click play again:

She fuckin’ the fuckin’ best
Mean my dick is the dick of death
Means I’m killin that pussy
Like Spike whenever that Jerry slept

I know Q’s verse is coming up and Kendrick has not stopped spitting. He’s murdering the beat in every sense of the word, and I’m positive this is one of his hardest songs ever. The aggressiveness in his tone is exhilarating and I could not contain myself while listening to it.

As I keep blasting his verse, he suddenly stops and screams:

“Q! Q!”

Oh shit. Schoolboy is about to begin and I know he’ll murder the beat as well, so I compose myself before he begins. The quickness of his bars hit me like a truck. He’s bodying the remix as aggressively as Kendrick did and I’m left speechless.

The remix ends with an outro of Kendrick saying, “If you want to be from HiiiPoWeR / Please come to friend zone / But don’t wowwy / You will not suck on my dick tonight.” Hands down one of the hardest Kendrick Lamar songs I’ve ever heard in the entirety of my life. Do yourself a favor and listen to it in order to be blessed forever.

The music video for “Look At Me!”, the hit that kickstarted XXXTENTACION’s career, is finally here. After teasing fans with snippets on his Instagram page, the Florida rapper finally came out with the full video.

Watch it below:

The video is wildly explicit. It starts off like it was expected to. X is going crazy inside a classroom while him and other students are turning up to the song. At the 0:52 mark, however, everything takes a turn. The music is suddenly cut and the rapper surprises everyone with clip for his record “Riot,” in which he addresses racial discrimination and police brutality.

This portion of the music video features X rapping while being hung from a tree. While he is furiously spitting verses, clips of protests and police brutality videos appear on the screen to give life to his lyrics. It reinforces the anger in his tone and makes the video extremely impactful.

At the 2:28 mark, the video once again takes a different turn. X is shown at what appears to be a kids’ play in an auditorium. The grim and dark terror behind his lyrics and energies come to full effect as he hangs one of the kids by the rope and kills him.

I honestly don’t know who signed off on this scene, but it had to someone as crazy as him to bring something so explicit and terrifying into the video. After he reads a powerful speech written by himself, he capitalizes on the gruesome imagery with a final message:

“Are you willing to risk your child’s future due to your own bigotry?
The choice is yours but you’re child will not stand for the hate
This generation will be loved, nurtured, heard and understood”

Kelechi dropped a new song on Tuesday titled “Be Right Back” ahead of his new project, Quarter Life Crisis. “Be Right Back” will not be included in Quarter Life Crisis. The project is composed of 12 original tracks.

Listen to “Be Right Back” below:

Despite Kelechi stating that “Be Right Back” is about homesickness, the song maintains an upbeat tempo as it describes his move from Atlanta to Los Angeles. He is making this move because he wants to make something of himself. He misses his family and girlfriend back home, but it will all be fine when he returns as a successful self-made man (“I been meeting with these labels / But they don’t know what it means / So it’s fuck ’em, fuck’ em, fuck ’em”).

The North Atlanta artist’s latest song has heavy pop vibes and a happy flow that makes it ready for radio. It’s only a matter of time until Kelechi blows up on a bigger stage than SoundCloud.

Kelechi promises in the description of this track that Quarter Life Crisis will be released “soon.” You can keep up with Kelechi’s work on his Twitter and SoundCloud, as well as right here on the Underground Flux.

Meek Mill released his new track “Contagious” with guest verses from Migos on Sunday night.

“Contagious” has decent lyrics and production. Nothing really stood out, but it can be a fun listen every once in a while. The replay value is low but the presence of all three Migos was a nice aspect to the track.

Notable Lyrics:

Migo and Meek Milly
Got stacks in the ceiling
I got money ties all the way up through Philly […]
Cause that shit contagious
These niggas outrageous

Migos have recently announced the existence of the sequel album Culture 2 so be on the lookout for that release. Stay updated to the Underground Flux for more news on Meek Mill and Migos.

Coming off Project Baby 2, “Roll in Peace (feat. XXXTENTACION)” by Kodak Black has been making rounds recently. Its production by London On Da Track is top notch and very appealing to trap fans. As a result, many artists, including Travis Scott and the Cash Me Outside Girl, have remixed it to their own sounds.

The Travis remix originally appeared on OG Chase B’s Streets Need That 5 mixtape on SoundCloud. It has since been often talked on social media and other platforms. Aside from dropping decent verses, Travis also adds his autotuned vocals to hum around Kodak’s lines. He puts his own essence to “Roll in Peace” and the outcome is solid overall.

Spent that hunnid on a G (skrrt skrrt)
That’s how much time I need
Everyday Halloween (alright!)
But we don’t trick and treat (straight up!)
Count deads in my dreams (cash!)

Next, we have Danielle Bregoli, better known as the “Cash Me Outside Girl” and most recently, self-proclaimed Bhad Bhabie. In my opinion, her remix was better than Trav’s for one main reason: lyricism. The bars were actually fun to hear and kept the listener wondering what she was going to say next. Different from Scott’s, she noticeably put a lot more effort on them. Another noteworthy aspect of her remix is how, even though she’s never rapped before, her flow sounds pretty much impeccable.

First they gone mention my age
Then they gone mention my race
4 million views in a day
They should admire the pace […]
Yeah i’m young and i’m rich and i’m small but i’m brave

Bhad Bhabie’s career can really take off she continues to take it seriously and if she grows her fanbase enough. As for Travis, he’s been working on his next album Astroworld and the collab project with Quavo. Stay tuned to the Underground Flux for their review.
